Week 13: Got Here a Month Ago

Well my family, it's been a whole month already since I got to the field! It feels like just yesterday I was stepping off the plane and onto Puerto Rico for the first time. It's so crazy! It does not feel like it's been a month, at all.

Mom - The weather there sounds like it's been pretty interesting this year! I got a letter from the Browns yesterday and they were saying that it's been kind of a strange winter and whatnot, so that's pretty crazy. It's weird to think that the leprechaun is already up in our yard, it doesn't feel like it should be March, you know? And I can't believe Taylor is coming home already, that's so weird! It seems like he just barely left!! And I hope all is going well with Dad's work and stuff.
Dad - My John Bytheway talk was something like "Get a good Attitude" or "Have a good Attitude" or something to do with having a good attitude haha. I haven't yet mailed off my iPod, but I think I will be able to today, so watch for it in the coming week. Also, once you get it, if you could just hold it for me until I get home, that would be great. :) Thank you. That's too bad to hear about the Jazz though... :( but that's great that Jeremy Evans won the dunk contest!! I was thinking last year that he would do a good job in it. And my buddy boy Rex… I miss him too! But only 21 more months, which seems crazy right now, but I think it will go fast. Oh, and you'll have to send pictures of the Halloween stuff as it comes along!

Marilee - I'll respond to your email separately, but thanks for an email this week!!

Well, here we go. This past week was kind of a blur haha... I don't really remember much. Let's see... We weren't able to pass by our prized investigator Luis last week, but he did come to church with us, which was great! He seemed to really have a good time, and participated, and was attentive. His baptismal date was for today, but we haven't taught him about the Word of Wisdom yet, and he's a smoker, so... probably no baptism for him tonight. Anyway, I'll try and remember day by day what happened. Last Wednesday after we finished our shopping and whatnot, we went and played some basketball, which was pretty fun. :) Then we ate at a member's house, and then contacted the rest of the night.

Thursday we had service. Funny story. So some lady in Aguas Buenas, which is Elder Griffin's and Elder Martinez' area, needed her roof painted. We woke up that morning and it was raining so she called and cancelled. They left a little before us, got to Aguas Buenas, and then called us to let us know that the lady had called them and said that since it stopped raining, we could go over. They told us it would take no longer than 2 hours. We got over there at about one, and didn't get home until about seven o'clock. Crazy. But it was still pretty fun, we had a good time and it was good to do some service.

Friday through Sunday were big contacting days, and we talked to quite a few cool people, and got some return appointments for this week. We'll see how they go. Sunday, like I mentioned before, Luis came to church, and had a great time. WE still need to teach him the Word of Wisdom, and we're praying that he will accept it!

Monday, we had our District Meeting and then Weekly Planning, and then ate at Firehouse Subs, and got some Coldstone Creamery ice cream. :) I love Puerto Rico! Then we contacted, and then in the evening, went to the Gonzalez' home. And you know what they fed us? Rice, garbanzo beans, these cool plantain wraps with cheese and meat inside, and then... PIG FEET. I ate it, but it was quite interesting... The texture is like ... fat. The taste was okay, but it was just like eating fat. Not my meat of choice haha. But then we had a good FHE lesson with them.

Yesterday, Tuesday, Elder Hammer and I traveled up to Bayamon to the office for a training meeting. That's where I got the letter from the Browns. :) But we listened to the Assistants for the whole morning, and then President taught us about the Atonement. It was a really great meeting. But we didn't get home until like 4, and so we were only able to teach to one person, who has been around for a while (as far as investigation goes). We finally broke through with him and found his needs though, and taught him about repentance and baptism. He finally committed to read and pray about the Book of Mormon, so hopefully there's some progress there!! But after that, we basically just contacted until we went home.

And I guess that brings us to today! I will try to mail home my iPod today, so watch for it. Also, we're hoping to teach Luis and Oscar tonight, who are our two best investigators, so we're praying for some success tonight! So that's that.

But I guess that's the week for you. :) I'm trying to attach some pictures, but it's been difficult lately... I don't know what's the problem. I may have to start mailing you my pictures on a USB every month or something, I don't know. If it doesn't start working, I'll have to do that. Anyway, I miss you and love you all very much. :) Pass on my love to Rex and Sunshine! Thank you for your support and for your love. Thank you for everything that you do for me. :) You are a wonderful family, and I love you very much! I look forward to next week when I can email you all again. :)

Sending you love from Puerto Rico!

Week 12: New Contact

My dearest family,

I am so sorry to hear that you are all sick. :( I'm so sorry! I hope that this sickness passes soon and that you all start feeling better! I will definitely pray for your health, and I hope you get feeling better soon! I know that the flu is no fun, and I remember when I had it once... no bueno. :(

Anyway, I will now respond to your emails.

Mom - Every day we wake up at 6:30 and go to sleep at 10:30. Some of the other elders get up earlier for working out and stuff, and sometimes I get up at around 6:20 to do some weight training and all. But no later than 6:30 can we sleep in on any day, and we should be in bed by 10:30. We live in a house actually! Not an apartment or anything, it's a true Puerto Rican house. It's got a small kitchen (you would die if you had to use it haha), a pretty big main room we use for our studies, and then three rooms we use. Two of them are for sleeping in, and one is where we keep our luggage and clothes and stuff. One room sleeps four of us, Elder Griffin and Elder Martinez, and then Elder Hammer and I, and then the other room is for the Zone Leaders, Elder Hafen and Elder Campbell. We also have two bathrooms, but one shower can't be used right now because the tiles in the bathroom need to dry or something weird like that, I'm not exactly sure haha. And the food is great! Rice, beans, and all that. Plus we've eaten more fast food since I've been here than I had in the last year!! Maybe not that much, but it sure feels like it. But no, we eat plenty of Puerto Rican food, and I've eaten pinchos, tostones, and some weird soup mixture which was okay. Also, we have a washer at our house which we use to wash our clothes, but the dryer doesn't work, so we hang our clothes on a clothesline. Definitely a different experience, and I miss our washer and dryer, but it's good at the same time. :) Also, I'll look for Mema's letter. I have a postcard for her and Bapa, so I need their house number because I forgot it haha… but yeah, I'll watch for that. I think the ZL's are getting the mail today. We'll see if it came.

Dad - Yeah, I didn't know about the letter from the High Council, so that was pretty cool to get! Bro. Peterson shared some good scriptures and everything, and I really enjoyed it. And yes, I did get my package. :) Thank you so much! Those granola bars will save my life I think :) Although I've kind of adjusted to not eating much in the evenings, which is good. Maybe I can lose some weight. :) But yes, I do have my bike. It's a great looking thing, and it's brand new, but I haven't yet used it. Elder Hammer broke his arm (an incredible story, and if I have time I'll add it as a P.S.), and so he can't ride his bike. Therefore, neither can I. So we mostly use the car, but do quite a bit of walking. If his arm wasn't broken, we would take our bikes out with the car, and then take our bikes from wherever we parked. We would definitely save miles that way, which would be good, but our circumstances have made that not possible. But it's a great looking bike and I'm excited to use it when I can! And at the end of my mission I just donate it back to the mission to be fixed up and then sold as a used bike to another missionary, so that will be cool. And I will look for the Jazz stats next week, and maybe how BYU basketball is doing? Just whatever you feel like sharing. :)

Marilee - No email this week?? :) In any case, I hope you get feeling better too, and that everything will start looking up for you. Just keep moving forward and do the best that you can little sis! Love you!

And now onto the weekly report.

It's been a pretty interesting week, full of contacting people and tracting and such. Last P-day we were going to go to the Botanical Gardens here in Caguas, but they're not open on Wednesdays! So we can't ever go... :( So we went to la Casa de Ajedrez, thinking that would be cool. Nope. Nobody was there. I'll send some pictures of it in another email, but it was dead. Not a soul was there. Yeah.. no bueno. So we went back to the house and just hung out until 6:00 haha.

Thursday morning we did a service project for some drug addict man that lives in our neighborhood. That was kind of cool. We cut down trees, uprooted a ton of weeds, and by the time we were finished, there was a pile of just tree branches, weeds, etc. about as tall as me, and about two or three car lengths long! I wish I had gotten a picture of it, but I forgot my camera that morning. The rest of that day, we taught a few people, including our (right now) Golden Investigator, Luis Lopez! We taught him about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and invited him to church, and he accepted. That was really cool. :) That was the highlight of the day.

Friday we did a lot of contacting. We walked a lot and passed by some people, but didn't really teach any lessons. We shared the message of the Restoration with a lot of people, and got a few people interested. Nothing too spectactular happened that day though, but I can see my arms starting to tan, which is kind of cool. :)

Saturday wasn't a very productive day. We did quite a bit of contacting, but we spent a little too much time in the car, trying to get from one place to another. That wasn't good. We felt bad about it and asked forgiveness when we prayed that night. We still worked hard, but we could have worked harder.

Sunday was a really good day though. We picked up Luis that morning, and we were very surprised to see that he was bringing his family!! He brought his wife and his two little boys. It was really great. They seemed to really enjoy Sacrament Meeting, and then afterwards, the parents were able to part with their kids in the nursery! This was their first time leaving their kids behind, so that was kind of interesting. But the kids did fine, and the parents really enjoyed Sunday School. They were very attentive and seemed to like the lesson. Then Luis' wife, I think her name is Stefania, went with one of the sister missionaries to Relief Society, and we stayed with Luis in Priesthood. He participated, and really had a great time I think. :)

Monday we had our district meeting in the morning, followed by weekly planning, and then lunch at.... Fuddruckers again haha. We passed by a few people, including Luis, and reviewed the Restoration with him. While he seemed to really enjoy church, we don't think he fully understands that this is THE true church on the earth. We'll be passing by again tomorrow I think to watch the Restoration video with them. Other than that, we had FHE with the Gonzalez family, and did some contacting again. We do a lot of contacting.

And then yesterday. It was a good, full day with studies and all, and we passed by some people. Last night though, we were able to teach another investigator, Oscar Perez. We taught him the Plan of Salvation, and invited him to church. He said that once he starts getting his answer, he'll come to church and then be baptized. So he just needs to read the Book of Mormon, get that answer, and then everything else will fall into place. I'm very confident of that. But it was a good lesson, and I think he really wants to know, he just needs to do his part. :)

Anyway, that was the week! I honestly can't believe it's already been a week since the last email. It feels like I was just here emailing. The days are a long, but the weeks are short. I miss you all and love you all, and really truly hope you start feeling better. I'll keep you in my prayers (as I already do), and I pray that things will start looking up. Thank you for your package again, and for your support. You are the best. :) I love you and wish you the best. Until next week mi familia!

iLes amo mucho!

P.S. So we can't have iPods here, so I'm going to the Post Office today to buy some package stuff to mail home my iPod and speakers... This means I'll need some CDs or something... Not necessarily a CD player and speakers, because we mostly just listen to our music in the car. But if you could maybe do something for me? If you could maybe send me some of my CDs in one of those CD holder things you put in cars? Thank you!

Week 11: Contacting and Teaching

Mi querida familia,

Honestly it feels like I was just here at this same computer typing an email to you last week. This past week has just flown by. I don't know what's going on haha.

As always, just want to start off with answering your emails.

Mom - That is really great news about Abuelo, I'm glad he's doing better. Hopefully like you said, you'll be able to find some cheaper tickets down there whenever the time comes. I will keep praying for you and them and whatever is the Lord's will, will happen. I hope everything works out well mi madre.

Dad - Thank you so so much for those words of encouragement. I particularly loved when you said that "You can't fall if you're always on your knees." Thank you so much Dad, I love you! Thank you for your words of wisdom and support. I'm still getting used to the mission life, but I think it's coming along okay. Just FYI, I haven't received anything from anyone since Provo, except for a letter I got on Monday from Bro. Peterson from the High Council. That was a really cool letter, and was unexpected!

Marilee - I will respond separately to your email :)

Well, here we go! After emailing last P-day, we did a lot of shopping at COSTCO and Walmart, and bought probably enough food to finish out this transfer. I also sent home some postcards to you and a couple of teachers from CHS. I plan on sending one to Mema and Bapa, but I forgot their house number, so if you could email that to me, that'd be great :) Anyway, after P-day was over, we ate at the Sanabrias, who are an older member couple. It was great! They fed us rice, beans, chicken, and potatoes with some tostones, which if you remember Mom, are double fried plantains. VERY good! Then we had a mission meeting with the ward mission leader, and then contacted until bed.

Thursday morning was our Zone Conference. My first Zone Conference, just barely a week in! And I got to play the piano, of course. :) It was really great. We received a LOT of instruction from Pres. Alvarado, who is a very passionate speaker. He is very spiritual, and VERY intense. He's a great man and a great president. I admire him and respect him greatly. After the conference, we did some contacting, taught a few lessons, and then went to bed. Oh, and I also gave Elder Stecker my $500 for the bike, so that's why that money isn't on my card anymore, if you were even worried about it. :)

Friday was another big contacting day. We walked up and down streets and talked to a bunch of people. Elder Hammer and I have been working hard to try and teach people. I'm still trying to get a hang of everything, but I think it's coming along all right. It's pretty hot and humid here, but thankfully we have a car, and we use it to get to where we need to be, and then walk around as much as we can. It's pretty good. We taught a lesson to a less active, which was cool, and then we were contacting in a place called Barriada Morales, and a young man opened his door and let us in to his home. His name is Luis Lopez. We taught him about the Book of Mormon, prayer, and left him with a copy. He agreed to have us come back on Sunday. A fantastic guy, and I'll get to him when I get to Sunday. :)

Saturday was once again, a big contacting day. We spent a lot of time talking to people in the streets, in their houses, and just all over the place. I have a picture from one of the urbanizaciones (neighborhoods) that I'll send with another email that I think you'll like. :) But yeah, a lot of contacting, and we taught some less actives. Our problem right now is that we don't have a lot of investigators who are progressing. Hopefully that will change, and we'll get some good investigators soon.

Now, Sunday was a pretty big day. It was the day for the Caguas Stake Conference, and besides having Pres. Alvarado there to speak, the Presiding Bishop, Bishop McMullin was there with his wife to speak. It was GREAT! He is such a dynamic and powerful speaker, and he talked about how blessed Puerto Rico would be if they paid their tithing. He talked about the blessings of the temple and such. It was great. After the Conference, we were able to pass by Luis again and teach him about baptism. We did, and testified of its importance, and invited him to be baptized. He accepted, and accepted to prepare for the 29th. :) Really great stuff! Now we just need to get him ready for that and hopefully get his family involved. He seems really accepting, and excited. I think we're passing by him again tonight, so that will be cool. :)

Monday morning was an interesting experience. ALL the missionaries in our mission met here in Caguas at the Stake Center, and we were privileged to hear from Bishop McMullin and his wife again. It was incredible! I learned so much about how we should act as missionaries, and what we need to be doing. He gave an inspired lesson about learning by the Spirit, and asking in faith. It was so great. That was really the highlight of this last week. After that, we had District Meeting, Weekly Planning, and then Lunch at Taco Bell. :) The rest of the day we contacted, taught lessons, and had FHE with the Gonzalez family. They're great!

And then yesterday was just a normal day. We stopped at Luis' but he wasn't home, but we still got some lessons in. Our area has been moved a bit, though. We're still in Caguas and all, but just a different area. We did some contacting last night in our new area, so that was pretty cool.

Anyway, that was pretty much my week! I've been typing furiously to get it all down as fast as I could, so I hope I didn't leave anything out. I know I forgot to send pictures from my trip to Puerto Rico last week, so I'll add those to the one picture I took this week haha. I will get better at taking pictures though, so I have more to send home each week. :) Anyway, I love you all so much, and I would just encourage you to make it a priority to read the Book of Mormon, and to also pray about it. One of the biggest things I've learned since being here is that the Book of Mormon and Prayer together are the KEY to knowing the truth of this Gospel. Without one or the other, nothing works, and we don't know. So I would just encourage you my family, and anybody who reads this to read the Book of Mormon, take Moroni's challenge in Moroni 10:3-5 seriously, and have faith in his promise that "by the power of the Spirit, ye may know the truth of all things." All things.

I love you my family, and I miss you and pray for you every day. I love you all very much and hope you are all doing great. Thank you for your teachings and for all you have done for me in my life. Thank you for your words of support and for your prayers and fasting. And thanks again in advance for the package. :)

I love you all so very much. Until next week mi familia! ¡Les amo mucho!

Week 10: Survived my First Week!

Well family, I'm still alive. :) I'll admit, the first few days here were some of the toughest I've been through. They were long, and all I could think about was home. I had no idea what I was going to do. I had some trouble adjusting to my new home and figuring things out, but with time that came. But honestly, on Fast Sunday I had a special experience. For my fast, I prayed and asked Heavenly Father for strength and help to adjust here and to not miss home too much. And you know what happened? Almost immediately after I ended my fast, I felt so much better. It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. It's still hard being here, and it's hard work and everything to go out every day in the heat and humidity, but Í feel so much better. I still miss you and home, but again, it doesn't weigh on my mind that much anymore. :)

First to respond to your emails.

Mom - That's really too bad to hear about Abuelo. :( I hope that you have a very safe trip to Argentina and that you can return home safely. I hope that everything works out there. I will keep you and our family in my prayers. And thanks for that picture of Marilee and her ice cream maker, I hope she's enjoying it!

Dad - Have fun dancing!! haha that's funny, I hope you have fun. :) And that's great that the Giants won! Thanks for the update :) I'm glad that things are starting to work out, and that you are receiving blessings. That's one thing that I testify of out here, that God loves us and blesses us, and so it's good to see a witness after trials of our faith (Ether 12:6) And thank you for your uplifting words.

Marilee - That ballroom dancing sounds great! Great job!! I hope you keep that up because it sounds like you really love it. :) That's cool that you were able to go to a competition and everything. I hope you are able to go to more and keep working on your talent! I'll write more in my email to you, but that's really great. :)

Now for my week, and it may be short because I'm running out of time.

After last Wednesday, we went out and bought some food at... WALMART!! You have no idea how strange it was to walk in. It's set up exactly like the Syracuse Walmart at home, but everything's in Spanish (with English subtitles). That was so great! We bought some food and stuff for the week, so that was pretty cool. Driving out, we passed McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Taco Time, Sizzler, Fuddruckers (what??), Home Depot, Best Buy, Costco, Baskin Robbins, and a bunch of other stuff! It was GREAT! I love it here because I get the foreign feel enough with the people and the experiences and the culture, but I get home with the food and the Walmart. :) I never thought I'd be so happy to see one in my life. :) Anyway, so that's that. Since this past week has been a blur, I'm just going to write about what I remember.

One night, I think Thursday night, we went to a member family's home, the Gonzalez family. They are great and I love them already! They remind me of a normal member family back home. :) They gave us a great dinner of rice and ribs, and Modesto, their grandpa who ísn't a member and who we are teaching, gave us his famous dip. It was great :) Also, they speak English and prefer it so we speak English with them. In fact, besides contacting, we speak English with a lot of our investigators just because they seem to like it better, and they know we can communicate better in English. We have also visited the Sanabrias couple, which is an older member couple, and we have dinner there tonight.

We have done a LOT of contacting, which has been a good experience for me just because it has helped me to develop more Spanish and more of what we're here to teach. I've enjoyed learning from Elder Hammer, and what he has to teach me. He's a great trainer I think. I'll be sending home a picture of us in our car. :) We haven't had too many investigator lessons because every time we pass by to try and teach them, they either aren't home, ignore us, or are busy. We contacted a really cool English speaking lady, named Lucille, who wanted an English Book of Mormon, but when we passed by, no one was there. She seemed very interested though, so I hope we can pass by again soon. I've also heard that we have a great investigating family, but I have yet to meet them. I hear they are really great though, and kind of our "jewel" as it were.

Anyway, so Sunday was a different experience. The church is built of cement, and the inside is all open air, like the lobby has no roof. The chapel does and all the classrooms do, but the lobby and everything is open air and all. So that was different. Also, all the meetings are obviously in Spanish, so that's a bit different. But it was a good experience and I enjoyed it!

Monday night we had FHE with the Gonzalez family, and they fed us again. :) They're great! And for lunch that day we ate at Fuddruckers. That was wonderful. :)

Yesterday was a rough day in the sense that nobody listened to us at all, and all our appointments fell through. But it was good, and I'm learning more and more each day. I hope to start talking more and teaching more lessons. I'm starting to figure things out here and feel better, so I hope to start progressing more.

Anyway, as always I hope you are all doing well. I pray for you every day, and keep you always in my heart. I know that the Lord has blessed you and will continue to do so. Puerto Rico is wonderful, and I know that I will learn to love it. I love it in the sense that it's great, but I don't love it to the point where I don't want to leave yet. But that will come with time. I love you, pray for you, and wish you the very best. :) May God continue to bless you!!

PS: I had my first Malta, which tastes like carbonated molasses. :) Love you!! Talk to you next week!

Week 9: ¡Puerto Rico! (Caguas)

Well my family, here I am. After 6 months of waiting, and 2 months of training, I am finally here in Puerto Rico. :) It was so good to be able to talk to you yesterday. So you know, my P-day from now on will be on Wednesdays.

Anyway, time to get you up to speed on my situation since I talked to you yesterday. After we were done, we waited a bit more for our flight, and then it came time to board. We went through the gate and stuff, but instead of getting on a plane, we got on a bus! The bus drove us out onto the tarmac, and we got onto a . . . you guessed it, a 2 propeller plane, not a jet. I'll be honest, I was a bit nervous. I don't have my camera with me right now, but once I can, I'll send you a picture of it. It was pretty crazy! The flight was a bit bumpier than normal, but it was good. As we flew over the island, I started to really feel love for the people. I finally started to feel like this was where I was supposed to be. The DR was really nice, and I miss it and the friends I made there, but Puerto Rico is where I need to be.

After we landed, we went through Customs and everything, and then looked for whoever was supposed to pick us up. After like 20 or 30 minutes of searching, we finally gave up, and a nice gentleman lent me his cell phone so I could call the Mission Office. They told me that the Assistants were there looking for us, and eventually they found us. :) Elder Putnam and Elder Lopez picked us up and we drove across the bridge from San Juan to the rest of the island. After a while, we ended up at the mission office. Elder and Sister Stecker, the Office workers, told us about a bunch of stuff regarding finances, bikes, cars, and the like. They gave me a mission debit card which they will add $200 every month for me to use. I'll be taking $500 off my card soon to pay for my bike, helmet, lock, and light. It's a VERY nice bike, and well worth the money. Or at least, that's what I hear. I'll send you a picture of that next week too. Anyway, after that discussion, we met Pres. Alvarado. He's not quite who I expected, and he's much more intense than I pictured he would be, but he is an incredible man, and I love him already. We had our first interview, and we had a nice talk. He is a great man. After that, we sat around a bit waiting for I'm not sure what, and then Elder Putnam took all us new Elders (3 came on a later flight), and we went to the train station and did some contacting. I bore my testimony of the Book of Mormon, and that was pretty cool. After, we eventually made it to the mission home, where I met Sis. Alvarado, who served all us new missionaries dinner. It was really great! We had a nice evening there. Then we went to the mission dormitory, where we stayed the night, and also where I met my trainer, Elder Hammer. He is from Idaho, and I think we will get along pretty well. :)

This morning, we woke up, did personal study, then came back to the mission office where we had a meeting with the AP's and the President, and then we drove here to Caguas which I guess is my first area. I think I'll be doing my first work tonight after 6:00. I'm a bit nervous and kind of scared, but excited. But Dad, if you have any advice, I'd love to hear it. :)

Anyway, I'm very happy to be here in Puerto Rico. It is an entirely different world from the DR. It's almost exactly like America. I mean, you can tell it's not, and you can tell it's another country and whatnot, but it's still got the comforts of home. I love it. :) I love it here so much. It's so green, tropical, and it's like paradise. I'm excited to get going on my real mission.

Also, mail wise, you're free to send mail now. Just send it to the mission office (the address I already gave you), and they'll give it to me through the Zone Leaders.

Well I hope you are all doing well. I hope that everything is good at home. I miss you muchly, and even more at the moment, just because of the change, but I know I'm here for a reason. Thank you for your support, and keep it coming. :) I love reading about what's going on at home, and I look forward to next week! I love you all and miss you.

May God bless you in all things!
